Confirm requirements before ordering
First, check whether your country permits the product and what import approvals, inspections or food safety requirements apply. Ask your customs broker to confirm the product classification and expected charges before making payment.
Next, assess the supplier. Request business details, relevant exporter registration and a clear product specification. Approve representative samples and agree on testing before accepting a commercial offer.
Agree on the commercial terms
Record quantity, packaging, quality limits, payment milestones and shipment timing in writing. State the agreed Incoterms rule, named port or place, and edition. Include inspection arrangements and a process for handling quality disputes.
Check export and import documents
NEPC guidance identifies commercial invoices, packing lists, financial documentation and transport documents among the records used in Nigerian exports. Product and destination requirements determine which additional certificates apply.
For relevant plant products, discuss phytosanitary requirements with the exporter and competent authorities. A laboratory certificate of analysis does not replace a required phytosanitary certificate. Ensure quantities, names and shipment details match across documents.
Plan clearance and delivery
Send draft documents to your broker for review before dispatch. Separate production lead time, sea transit, customs clearance and inland delivery when planning stock. An estimated sailing schedule is not a guaranteed warehouse arrival date.
Keep funds available for applicable duties, port charges and transport. Clarify who handles unexpected storage or inspection costs.
