Moisture damage in agro exports can turn a valuable shipment into rejected stock. Dried hibiscus, spices, seeds and nuts need protection throughout storage and transport. Prevention starts before loading, with suitable initial product condition and a documented handling plan.
Check dryness before packing
Agree on moisture specifications appropriate to the commodity and intended use. Test representative samples using a suitable method. Products that feel dry may still fall outside the agreed specification, so touch alone is not a dependable check.
Allow processed material to reach suitable packing conditions. Avoid sealing warm products where trapped moisture could create problems. Keep drying and packing areas protected from rain, dust and pests.
Choose suitable packaging
Select packaging for the product, journey and storage environment. Discuss liners, sealing and moisture protection with a packaging specialist. A bag that suits one commodity may perform poorly with another.
Store packed goods away from damp surfaces and protect them during transfer to the container. Inspect packaging for tears or wet patches before loading.
Prevent moisture damage in agro exports
Inspect the container for leaks, residual moisture, odours and contamination. Check the condition of floors and doors. Reject unsuitable equipment before goods enter it, and document the inspection with photographs.
Use the CTU Code as a reference for safe packing. Agree on suitable moisture control measures for the route. Desiccants cannot compensate for loading wet cargo or using a leaking container.
Inspect goods on arrival
Record the seal number and packaging condition when receiving the shipment. Isolate suspicious goods and arrange assessment before using them. Prompt records also help support a quality investigation or insurance claim.
