First, identify the type and intended use

Allow a sample to stand in a clear, clean container. Observe separation and sediment, but remember that a clean-looking sample can still fail moisture and impurity tests. Also inspect drums or jerry cans for rust, previous-product odours, leaking seals and poor labelling.
Use representative sampling
A supplier may present a good top sample while the full tank or batch varies. Agree on a sampling procedure that covers the lot, tank levels or randomly selected packages. Use clean sampling equipment, label and seal samples, and create matching buyer, seller and laboratory samples.
For high-value orders, independent sampling and inspection can reduce disagreements about whether the tested sample represented the goods shipped.
Laboratory tests that matter
Free fatty acids or acid value indicate hydrolytic deterioration and are strongly affected by fruit handling and processing delays. Moisture and volatile matter help assess water-related deterioration. Insoluble impurities measure unwanted solid matter. Peroxide value and other oxidation indicators help reveal oxidative damage.
Depending on the product and market, buyers may also request fatty-acid profile, iodine value, carotene content, contaminants, pesticide residues, heavy metals, mineral-oil hydrocarbons, microbiological tests or checks for adulteration. The appropriate panel depends on the grade, use and destination regulation.
Verify traceability and processing controls
Ask where the fruit was sourced, when it was processed, how the oil was clarified, what containers were used and how the lot was stored. Long delays between harvesting and sterilisation or processing can contribute to higher acidity. Poorly cleaned tanks and reused containers can introduce contamination.
Reliable suppliers should identify batch numbers and provide relevant production, cleaning, storage and test records. If the supplier cannot connect the sample to a specific lot, the result offers limited protection.
Check packaging and transport readiness
Packaging must be clean, dry, food-compatible where applicable, tightly sealed and strong enough for the journey. For bulk movements, review the suitability and previous cargo history of tanks or flexitanks. Protect the product from water ingress, excessive heat, incompatible cargo and tampering.
Labels and documents should match the product, lot, net weight, origin and agreed grade. Confirm destination-country rules before shipment.
Red flags for bulk buyers
Be cautious when a seller refuses independent sampling, offers no lot identification, relies only on colour as proof, cannot provide recent test results, uses unclean containers, makes claims without documentation or pressures the buyer to load before approval.
A certificate of analysis is valuable only when it relates to the actual lot, uses agreed methods and comes from a laboratory acceptable to the buyer.
