The Cocoa Farmers Alliance Association of Africa (COFAAA) has announced an ambitious plan to seize control of over 70% of global cocoa production, leveraging Africa’s unparalleled competitive and comparative advantages. This strategic move aims to redefine the global cocoa landscape, ensuring a more equitable and sustainable future for African cocoa farmers.

In a statement released by the Global Coordinator of COFAAA, Comrade Adeola Adegoke, and made available to PUNCH Online on Monday, the association detailed plans for the official unveiling of its COFAAA chapter on February 12, 2025, in Oyo State, Nigeria. This landmark event will serve as a catalyst for fostering regional cooperation among Africa’s cocoa-producing nations, with a focus on sustainability and farmer-centric practices.

Addressing Economic Disparities
Adegoke highlighted the paradox facing African cocoa producers: despite being the largest contributors to global cocoa supply, African nations see disproportionately low financial returns. West African countries, which dominate cocoa production, generate only about $10 billion annually—a stark contrast to the global cocoa market’s estimated worth of $200 billion.

Currently, Africa accounts for approximately 62% of global cocoa output. However, COFAAA’s vision is to elevate this figure to 70%, ensuring that African farmers receive a fairer share of the industry’s profits and recognition.

A Unified Front for Progress
The COFAAA launch will coincide with the General Assembly meeting of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN) at the same venue. This gathering will unite key stakeholders, policymakers, and industry leaders to deliberate on the future of cocoa farming in Africa.

“With COFAAA, we are creating a unified front for smallholder cocoa farmers across Africa,” Adegoke stated. “Our goal is to develop strategies that will enhance sustainability, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and strengthen Africa’s influence in the global cocoa market.”

COFAAA’s mission extends beyond increasing output. The association aims to empower smallholder cocoa farmers through education, resource provision, and advocacy for fair trade practices. By establishing a robust support system, COFAAA seeks to boost productivity, improve market access, and ensure that the benefits of cocoa farming are more equitably distributed.

An Invitation to Shape the Future
COFAAA has extended an open invitation to all cocoa stakeholders in Nigeria and across Africa to participate in this historic event. The launch marks the beginning of a new chapter in the collective advancement of the African cocoa industry, promising a future where African farmers are not only the backbone of global cocoa production but also its primary beneficiaries.

As COFAAA embarks on this transformative journey, the global cocoa industry will undoubtedly watch closely. The association’s success could redefine the dynamics of cocoa production and trade, setting a precedent for other agricultural sectors across the continent.
